ADOPT OR PLANT A TREE IN THE MONARCH REGION.

You will go beyond putting a seed in the earth: you will ensure these forests survive for future generations

Bosque somos

BosqueSomos is an initiative of Alternare A.C., an organization dedicated, for more than 23 years, to promoting comprehensive sustainable development for the conservation of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve by empowering the communities that inhabit the region.

Through BosqueSomos, we want to offer you an alternative to get involved in the construction of a sustainable future and the regeneration of the ecosystems that host the wonderful migratory phenomenon of the monarch butterfly.

You will collaborate with Alternare and the Carpinteros indigenous community located in Michoacán, Mexico, through a tree adoption program where you and anyone in the world can adopt a tree in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

WE ARE
ALTERNARE A.C.

In Alternare we have been working for decades for the conservation and regeneration of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. Our work strategy is based on a comprehensive sustainable development model, which includes training, and support for local communities. This approach encourages the communities’ well-being, while promoting good use and management of natural resources and helping them face the effects of climate change with resiliency.

Our work has been recognized
nationally and internationally

The impact of our model responds to some of the main problems we face worldwide: environmental degradation, food insecurity, rural poverty, among many others.

The comprehensiveness involved in our work has made us the recipients of numerous national and international awards. During 2020, we were named as the second initiative to improve lives in Latin America and the Caribbean by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

In 2018, the United Nations through FAO selected us as one of the best innovative and scalable initiatives to achieve sustainable rural development for our results in eradicating poverty in rural communities as well as protect and regenerate natural resources. In addition, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the U.S. Fish &Wildlife Service named us ‘Conservation Champions’.

Join us and let’s build a sustainable future together!

WE ARE CARPINTEROS
INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY

The Carpinteros indigenous community is located within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in the municipality of Zitácuaro, in the northwestern sub-region of the State of Michoacán.

Our community contributes 222 hectares of forest to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve’s core zone; another 287 hectares are part of the buffer zone; while 348 are in the free zone.

The forests of our community are typical of temperate climates, with species varieties such as Oak, Chokecherry, Ash and Pine. At higher altitudes there is also Oyamel forest where the Monarch Butterfly overwinters annually, during from November to March.

The environment is where everything begins. Today we are working together and are organized to improve the forest.

We collaborate to achieve a community where poverty is non-existent, and that is motivated and benefits from the efforts of all if us.

Through this project, we invite you to be part of the area’s wealth and participate in the construction of a sustainable future. Adopt or plant a tree in the Monarch region and together we will regenerate and conserve the area.

THE
MONARCH BUTTERFLY
BIOSPHERE RESERVE

The Mexican government established (1986) the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve (MBBR) to protect the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) overwintering area. The Mexican government first attempted to legally protect the monarch butterfly’s (Danaus plexippus) overwintering habitats in 1986, originally protecting the five sanctuaries where most of the monarchs congregated. It was until 2001 that it officially created the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve (MBBR) expanding the original reserve and encompassing a larger and contiguous area.

Currently, the decree protects the main sanctuaries of butterflies. These forests are also habitat for hundreds of plants and animals and are home to endemic organisms such as salamander (Pseudoeurycea belli), ajolote (Ambystoma rivulare) and species subject to special protection such as pine (Pinus martinezii). The area is considered by the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) as a terrestrial region (110, Sierra Chincua) priority for conservation. The area is composed of 11 municipalities in the states of Mexico and Michoacán that include 57 ejidos, 13 indigenous communities and 21 small properties (CONANP, 2011).
